Precipitating Condensation Clouds in Substellar Atmospheres

چکیده
We present a method to calculate vertical profiles of particle size distributions in condensation clouds of giant planets and brown dwarfs. The method assumes a balance between turbulent diffusion and sedimentation in horizontally uniform cloud decks. Calculations for the Jovian ammonia cloud are compared with results from previous methods. An adjustable parameter describing the efficiency of sedimentation allows the new model to span the range of predictions made by previous models. Calculations for the Jovian ammonia cloud are consistent with observations. Example calculations are provided for water, silicate, and iron clouds on brown dwarfs and on a cool extrasolar giant planet. We find that precipitating cloud decks naturally account for the characteristic trends seen in the spectra and colors of Land T-type ultracool dwarfs. متن کاملRadiation hydrodynamics simulations of dust clouds in the atmospheres of substellar objects
The temperature structure and the motions in the atmospheres of cool stars are affected by the underlying convection zone. The radiation hydrodynamics code CO5BOLD has been developed to simulate (small patches of the) convective surface layers of these stars. Updated opacity tables based on PHOENIX data and a description for the formation, destruction, advective transport, and settling of dust ...

We calculate detailed chemical abundance profiles for a variety of brown dwarf and extrasolar giant planet atmosphere models, focusing in particular on Gliese 229B, and derive the systematics of the changes in the dominant reservoirs of the major elements with altitude and temperature. We assume an Anders and Grevesse (1989) solar composition of 27 chemical elements and track 330 gas–phase spec...
متن کاملCloud formation in substellar atmospheres
Clouds seem like an every-day experience. But – do we know how clouds form on brown dwarfs and extra-solar planets? How do they look like? Can we see them? What are they composed of? Cloud formation is an old-fashioned but still outstanding problem for the Earth atmosphere, and it has turned into a challenge for the modelling of brown dwarf and exo-planetary atmospheres. Cloud formation imposes...
متن کاملRain and Clouds in Brown Dwarf Atmospheres: a Coupled Problem from Small to Large
The large scale structure of a brown dwarf atmosphere is determined by an interplay of convection, radiation, dust formation, and gravitational settling, which possibly provides an explanation for the observed variability. The result is an element depletion of the dust forming regions and an element enrichment of the dust evaporating sites. The formation of dust cloud structures in substellar a...
